Modern digital hearing devices are nothing like hearing aids
No longer are hearing aids like ugly large beige bananas worn behind the ear, often whistling and making all sounds loud. The modern digital hearing aids are smart; can learn how the wearer wants to hear sounds; can focus on important speech sounds; can work out where sounds are coming from; and do not look anything like a hearing aid! In fact in the last 10 years the modern digital hearing device has proven to be a medical marvel, delivering better hearing to millions of people with hearing loss.
Learning hearing aids
Today’s modern hearing aids are fully automatic and capable of detecting different sounds in order to enhance speech over noise. However there are times when some people prefer to change their hearing aid’s volume settings for different listening environments.
With the new generation of learning hearing aids it is possible to teach the hearing aid how you would like the volume set in any situation. Every time the volume control is used the hearing device logs the setting against the type of sound environment the change was made. After a while the hearing device is smart enough to make the volume changes automatically reducing the need for you to make they changes yourself!
Comfort and cosmetic
A very important development in hearing aids over the last 4 years has been their design, form and function. The modern hearing device places into the ear canal a miniature speaker that is connected by a thin wire to a small microphone with amplifier behind the ear. Not only does this design feel more comfortable to wear and provide very clear sound but it is almost invisible to for any one to see when worn.
What is better – wearing 1 or 2 hearing aids?
Binaural hearing (hearing with two ears) is essential for many important listening tasks such as working our where sounds are coming from and following conversation in background noise. To experience how much two ears are better at hearing than one you only have to listen to music with a headphone over one ear, then with headphones over both ears – it sound is much richer and fuller with both ears. This is because the auditory cortex in the brain compares information from both ears in order to build up a picture of the sound.
Wearing two hearing aids helps the auditory system to focus on sounds and not only improves the richness and fullness of sound wearing two hearing aids also improves hearing in background noise. Almost everyone benefits more from using two hearing aids instead of one.
