Tinnitus is extremely common and is often referred to as "ring in the ears"
In fact Tinnitus can be experienced in many ways including whistling, buzzing, cicada screeching, ocean sounds or rushing noise.
Approximately 3 out of 10 Australians over fifty five years of age experience Tinnitus at some stage. For many people Tinnitus is infrequent and temporary, but for a small and significant minority of people Tinnitus can be experienced permanently and at disturbing levels.
Although Tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, the presence of Tinnitus does not mean the person is going deaf. There are a number of causes which may trigger Tinnitus:
- Middle ear infection
- Dental or jaw problems
- Some medications
- Exposure to loud noises
- Inner ear damage
- Stress
- Diet - high in caffeine
People who experience bothersome Tinnitus should seek a hearing assessment. Today there are a range of successful therapies available.
